Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I document my journey through motherhood. Grab a drink and stay awhile :)

Touched out? Getting enough "us time"

Touched out? Getting enough "us time"

A few posts back I talked a lot about self care, it is so important to find that balance and fill your cup (I'm still working on this...) But, as hard as self care is, US time seems to be even harder. Recently Matt asked if I made up the term "touched out" and it got me thinking if this was something all moms feel, just stay at home moms, or just moms with young children? If I had to describe being touched out, it basically just means I have given all of myself to my tiny humans all day and by bedtime I just need to be left alone.

Brody is 9 months and Carter just turned 2, I am pretty much holding one of them at any given time all day long. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my baby cuddles but it does get exhausting and often leaves me neglecting my relationship with my husband come bedtime. Currently "US time" consists of me going to bed as soon as the kids are down but to keep up the communication I be sure to text him from the other room to ask him to bring me a reeses peanut butter cup. All of this said, we have vowed to make more time for us in the future and have tried to think outside the box to keep it fun.

As cliche as it sounds, I play that Brad Paisley song in my head "Remind me", we are more than just mom and dad-we are husband and wife and we deserve to have that time together. I don't want it to sound like Matt and I struggle, we just usually put our relationship last on the priority list and I want it to be much closer to the top. Here are some of the things we have come up with, most of which we can do at home after we put the kids to bed:

  • we have tons of games (cards, jenga, etc) and since I always win, this is fun for me!
  • the pool is warming up, night swims are a great way to decompress
  • start a netflix series, or Big Brother comes back on soon (that is our FAV!), sometimes just sitting together on the couch is enough.
  • alternate making fun desserts for each other (since we always eat dinner as a family if possible)
  • monthly date nights (This is a lot harder than it sounds for us!)

Recently we were able to go on our second date night since Brody's birth and of course it was planned out well in advance. I was so excited and maybe drank 3 cups of coffee to stay awake but I was determined to get some QT with Matt. Since my mom uniform consists primarily of yoga pants and graphic tees, I wanted a new outfit for the occasion! Since I can barely get a babysitter to get my yearly teeth cleaning, and shopping with two littles sounds more like a form of torture than fun, I opted to give Thred Up a try. Thred Up is a fashion resale site so I was able to score this Ann Taylor dress for dirt cheap without leaving my house.

We ended up at a little Italian restaurant for dinner after we had a nice walk through the park with our good friend Natalie with Natalie Ryan Photography, very intimate LOL!
