Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I document my journey through motherhood. Grab a drink and stay awhile :)

potty learning week 1

Our biggest struggle is getting him to sit long enough to go. We brought out all the special activities for this, bubbles, iPad, trucks, stickers, soap paint....

So I'm going to preface this with the WHY-why we chose now to potty train?  Matt and I had absolutely ZERO interest in potty training, we have just barely gotten the grasp of having two babies, so we certainly didn't want to complicate things. Carter started to ask to go on the potty and the first time we cheered and mentioned behind closed doors that we probably needed to think about potty training. Then he did it again. And again. And again. The book I read (and the method we chose to follow) said that we should capitalize on this period of interest. I also felt that if he was asking to go on the potty, I was doing him a HUGE disservice by making him continue to crap in his pants.

Potty training day 1 - I'm writing this live, from the trenches, up to my neck in crap, potty training. It is currently 3:45pm and depending on the minute things go from great to disastrous. We had a successful (non promoted) poop on the potty, followed by a no warning poop all over dad, which of course fell to the floor (my dog ate it while we were rushing to the potty, for those of you that know my dogs, I'll give you one guess which vial creature found that to be a tasty treat....) I don't think things could be much worse so I'll leave you with that for day 1.

Day 2 - Carter slept in and was refreshed and ready to start the day. I was surprised that the first thing he said when he woke up was that he just peed in his diaper. Something is clicking, or at least a lot of thinking is going on in that brain. We had a quick accident, then a successful catch by mom and a pee on the potty. I was hoping this success would boost his confidence. Not so much-another accident. But, alas a succesful prompted pee. Maybe we are getting somewhere after all. At this point, I am mostly looking for prompted potty successes as the book says we are in a process of going from "i peed, to i am peeing, to i have to go pee" I figure we are just at I am peeing.... It is now nap time, I am faced with a toddler that has the strength of an ox and apparently his protest to potty training is resisting a nap. Send coffee, and wine, lots of wine.

4:30 day 2. Things are looking up (for this moment anyway). I've backed off, we've had no accidents, and successfully promoted potty trips all afternoon.

Both boys are in bed. Day 2 is complete and it went MUCH better than day 1, but still is far from anywhere close to ok. I'm having two glasses of wine for sure tonight. I really don't have much more to say other than I am cautiously optimistic tomorrow will be continued improvement.

It is clearly a family affair over here (notice the stickers on the potty...!)

10:45 day 3. This is a roller coaster. We have made leaps and bounds for pee. But poop is a huge issue. He pooped on the floor several times and was mortified but he was doing the on and off the potty dance and really struggling. I feel bad for him.

It is the end of day 3 and we had a no accident and diaper free nap so I will relish in that success for now.

3 hour diaper free nap!!!!!!

Today is start of day 4 -I sit here from what I can only assume is a temporary and false sense of potty training success/achievement/etc. Carter has pee down. He has been either telling me or going pee when prompted. I am probably too confident in his pee ability. But, we haven't had any poop since yesterday's disastrous fiasco so I'm sure my bubble will soon be shit on. But I like to consider us more than halfway done. Light at the end of the tunnel. We also survived our first brief outing with no accidents.

Day 7 - So I skipped a few days, mostly because it was rather uneventful, in a good way! Today was our first ever outing complete with two trips to the potty... successfully!!! I know we have some accidents in our future but after a week of this potty learning stuff I am feeling very confident in the direction we are going.

Yup! we have moved to undies! How cute is he!

The only thing left is to just keep practicing. We also have to fully tackle nights. He has slept over night a few times with no accidents but lately has been waking at 4:30 or 5 am (yea, thats fun....) wet and upset. I am not done with this topic, but I will leave y'all with our first week and update next week!
